Strong Majority Support Retaliatory Tariffs
Canadians say they want the federal government to go dollar for dollar with the Americans
New polling from Leger explores Canadian attitudes towards American tariffs, and how Canadians are reacting in response. The survey also examined American attitudes on the situation, and Americans aren’t sold on the benefits of tariffs, nor do a majority think there should be tariffs on Canadian imports.
Canadians Support Retaliation Against US Tariffs
Canadians were asked whether they would support or oppose responding dollar for dollar to any tariffs the US imposes on Canadian goods. As a result, 70% of Canadians either strongly support or somewhat support the Canadian government going tit-for-tat with the US on tariffs.
Support for retaliatory tariffs is highest among Liberals (89%) and Bloc voters (85%), while still being nearly as high among New Democrats (82%).
A majority of Conservatives voters (61%) support the Canadian government retaliating dollar for dollar against US tariffs, but they also have the highest share of opposition (27%) to the idea.
