Starting today, the United States will finally slap tariffs on Canada and Mexico. The tariffs are in retaliation for the Canadian and Mexican governments not doing enough to fight the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

Given we put forward a plan to deal with that exact issue to appease the Americans, it’s obvious their justification was baseless and nothing more than an excuse to kick off a new trade war.

This has been a threat in the making for the past few months, and one that Canadians are not happy about in the slightest. Since Trump has been making overt threats at Canadian sovereignty, threatening to ruin our economy, and the general deterioration of US-Canada relations, it’s not surprising that Canadians want to fight back.

Hit The Americans Back

Leger has been conducting polling on the issue of US-Canada relations and gauging how Canadians are feeling towards our southern neighbours. In response to American tariffs, three-in-four Canadians say to hit the Americans back dollar for dollar.

That support is up from their poll a week prior, now sitting at 74%. In contrast, the share of Canadians who oppose taking retaliatory measures against the American government sits at 14%.

From Liberals to Conservatives, all Canadians are in favour of retaliating against the American government for these oncoming tariffs. Conservatives rank the lowest in terms of support at 67%, while Liberals are the highest at 91%. Bloc and New Democratic voters are at 87% and 80%, respectively.

Even before these tariffs have taken effect, Canadians have been souring rapidly on the Americans and on Donald Trump.
